Roku vs Apple TV vs Fire Stick — Which to Pick

If your TV is older than 5 years, or you just want a faster experience, a streaming device adds every app you'd want for $30-130. Here's how to pick.

Roku Express / Stick / Ultra ($30-100)

Best for most people. Cleanest interface — every app on a grid, no nagging, no ads pushing one service over another. Works with every streaming service. Roku Ultra ($100) adds Dolby Vision, Atmos, Ethernet, voice remote with headphone jack. Roku Express ($30) is fine for a basic TV. Roku Stick 4K ($50) is the sweet spot.

Amazon Fire TV Stick ($35-60)

Best if you have Amazon Prime. Same price as Roku, similar performance. Interface pushes Prime Video heavily and shows Amazon ads on the home screen — annoying for some. If you watch a lot of Prime Video, this is fine. If not, Roku is cleaner.

Apple TV 4K ($129-149)

Best if you have iPhone/Mac. Most expensive but best picture, fastest interface, Dolby Vision/Atmos out of the box. Integrates with HomeKit, AirPlay, Apple ecosystem. If you already have Apple TV+ or use AirPlay regularly, the premium is worth it. Otherwise, Roku does 90% of what Apple TV does for $30.

Chromecast with Google TV ($50)

Best if you have Android. Google's interface is cleaner than Fire TV, slightly more cluttered than Roku. Strong YouTube and YouTube TV integration. Good if you cast a lot from your phone.

Smart TV apps (free, built-in)

Most TVs from 2019+ have YouTube TV, Hulu, Netflix, Disney+ built in. Often slower and updated less often than a dedicated device, but they work. Save $30-100 if your TV's built-in apps are good enough. Test before buying.

Our pick

For most households: Roku Stick 4K ($50). Clean interface, every app, no ads pushing services on you, fast enough. Works on every TV with HDMI. Buy on Amazon during a sale and you'll often get it for $35.

For Apple households: Apple TV 4K ($129). Worth it for the integration if you already use AirPlay or HomeKit.

How many devices do you need? One per TV. Stream apps from your phone via Cast/AirPlay if you have a smart TV but just want occasional content. Don't try to share one device across rooms — it's not designed for it.
