How to Cancel Cable (Without Losing Your Mind)
Canceling cable feels harder than it is. The companies make it harder on purpose. Here's the script that works.
Step 1 · Sign up for the new service first
Don't cancel anything until your replacement is live. Most streaming services start instantly and offer a free trial. This way you have zero gap and you've already verified the new service has the channels you care about.
Step 2 · Test for one to two weeks
Confirm three things: the channels you watch most are there; your DVR/recordings transfer or you're okay losing them; the apps work on every TV in your house. If any of these fail, you can still go back to cable before canceling.
Step 3 · Call (don't cancel online)
Cable companies make the online cancellation flow easy on purpose so they can hit you with retention deals before you finalize. Call retention or cancellation directly. The number's on your bill.
The exact script that works
Don't argue. Don't explain why. Don't apologize. Just say:
"I want to cancel my TV service effective today. I'm keeping my internet."
That's it. Wait for them to confirm.
What they'll try
Retention offer. They'll offer to knock $40 off for six months. Math it out — if they had this rate, why weren't they already giving it to you? You'll be in the same spot in six months.
Free premium channels. Worthless if you weren't watching them.
Bundle bait. 'I can save you money if you keep TV.' Stick to the script.
Step 4 · Get the cancellation in writing
Email or text confirmation, with a date. They'll say it's done. It's not done until you have proof. Save it.
Step 5 · Return the equipment within 14 days
Take photos of the boxes you return. Get a printed receipt from the FedEx/UPS store. People get charged $300+ for 'lost equipment' they returned without proof. The receipt is your protection.
Step 6 · Renegotiate your internet
Without a TV bundle, your internet may go up because the bundle discount disappears. Or it may go down because you're now a 'standalone customer' and they want to keep you. Call your internet provider and ask for the loyalty rate. Easy $10-30/mo savings.
